About Michael Buie

Michael graduated with a Bachelor of Health Science (honours) in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Calgary in 2020. He is now a second-year master’s student specializing in Epidemiology in the Community Health Sciences Program at the University of Calgary under the supervision of Dr. Gilaad Kaplan. His current research is focused on Inflammatory Bowel Disease and its burden globally and in Alberta. More specifically, it is interested in temporal trends in IBD hospitalization rates in the aging IBD population of Alberta. Michael gave an oral presentation at the 9th Annual Asian Organization for Crohn’s and Colitis and poster presentations at Digestive Disease Week 2021 and Crohn’s and Colitis Congress 2022 (which will be held in January). Michael is also a published author, co-authoring a book chapter in Curbside Consultation in IBD: 3rd edition titled “What is the most effective smoking cessation program for Crohn’s patients?” with Dr. Gilaad Kaplan. The chapter outlines that a Crohn’s specific smoking cessation program is unavailable. Based on best evidence, recommended strategies (including motivational interviewing) were implemented into Dr. Kaplan’s IBD clinic, and the chapter is now used by his colleagues as a primer to support smoking cessation in IBD patients to proactively improve health outcomes. Outside of academia, Michael loves music and plays piano in a jazz quartet at venues around Calgary and formal events for the University of Calgary.
