About Michael Campbell

Over the course of my nine years working professionally in journalism, starting at a local weekly newspaper, my journey through the world of news coverage has provided me with a unique mix of experiences in both television and print media. Having worked for nearly five years in print media, I have grown to have an understanding of what true community-oriented news coverage should look like. For many of the communities I have served in the Virginia counties of Dinwiddie, Prince George, Sussex, and Surry, our newspapers were the only source of news for residents in the area, requiring myself to be the voice of the community and ask questions that our readers and others had regarding what was going on within their county and towns, which included sharing the good news of what their neighbors were accomplishing while also holding government leaders accountable and asking the questions that needed answering. In my almost five years of working in print media, I worked my way up the ladder, from a staff writer to assistant editor, to eventually news editor, a position I currently serve in for Womack Publishing Company and their three newspapers, The Dinwiddie Monitor, The Prince George Journal, and The Sussex-Surry Dispatch. In addition, I serve as the Digital Media Coordinator for the three newspapers, overseeing the web content and social media presences for each publication. While I have built an extensive print background, my time in television helped me fine-tune the product I currently deliver to our readers online and in print weekly. During my collective year working at television stations in Richmond, I learned the meaning of breaking news coverage first hand during my time at NBC12 News and WRIC 8News in Richmond, where I served as Digital Content Producer. That, along with breaking weather and crime coverage allowed me to bring levelheaded breaking news reporting to our newspapers. I now enjoy my time as Coordinator of Communications and Public Relations for Prince George County Public Schools, a medium-size school division in Southside Virginia and member of Virginia Department of Education's Region 1 Superintendent's District.
