About Michael Carey

I have extensive experience defining automation philosophies and creating flexible batch designs for both stick built and integrated skid processes in biopharmaceutical, bulk chemicals, and specialty chemical manufacturing. I have designed automation systems for the main biopharmaceutical processes, blending, distillation, cleaning skids, utilities, wastewater treatment, and automatic GC sampling systems. My integration experience extends to creating custom applications for information systems (historians, EBR, material/inventory control, campus energy monitoring) which encompasses a range of programming from system services to web-based interfaces. I have designed and implemented control libraries, strategies, and patterns using many different automation system platforms; adapting my designs to incorporate the strengths of the different platforms. I realize that the automation system design is not isolated to the project but that it must also incorporate methods to reduce total cost of ownership by incorporating a validation strategy, generate usable and useful documentation (not just because it is a SDLC requirement), and minimize future change control costs.I get the most enjoyment at work by creating custom tools to automate the project-allowing me to generate design documents, code, and test protocols from a single database. Using OPC, I have also created automatic testing programs.
