About Michael Chanell

Over the years I have gained extensive practical and varied skills and experience in the environmental management field working for private environmental consultancies, State and local governments, and currently in business with IBM as a global program manager in the Corporate Environmental Affairs team. More recent responsibilities at IBM include implementation and continual improvement of global programs for waste reduction and management, product end-of-life management, non-essential plastic packaging elimination and waste reduction, and water conservation. Other areas of experience cover environmental incident prevention, secondary containment of industrial liquids, and execution of IBM’s global environmental management system and ISO 14001:2015 EMS accreditation. I've been fortunate to have worked with various operational functions at IBM including semiconductor manufacturing, product assembly facilities, data processing centres, equipment refurbishment and repair centres, and warehousing. With a keen interest in the ICT industry sector I've actively participated in the technical development of the re-published Australian Standard in 2022 as AS 5377:2022, Management of Electrical and Electronic Equipment for Re-use or Recycling, as an industry representative of the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA).
