Background
About Michael Crawford
Aside from technical competency, what is most important to me as a leader? It is, firstly, to focus on the long term, developing processes, procedures, and a culture that will be impactful and function far into the future. This is not easy, but it is only one side of the coin. The other element of successful leadership is trust. This requires technical competency, consistency, fairness, and a gamut of other virtues, especially respect: Everyone is different - we think and communicate differently, resulting in different strengths and needs. We must never forget this when dealing with others. Trust must be earned and sustained. In the realm of technical skills, I am often performing advanced troubleshooting of electronics and controls, electrical circuits, mechanical systems and components, BMS/ DCIM, and honing our data center power and cooling efficiency. I also negotiate and supervise 3rd party work, and even sometimes forge new relationships and solutions. I am also continuously improving principles of good procedure writing that I learned in Navy Planner School and have developed through hundreds of procedures I have written. In a nutshell, procedures must be understandable, unambiguous, and technically accurate. Furthermore, they need to be all encompassing, yet concise. These are the four pillars of good procedures, necessary to avoid potential for negative consequences. Besides these things, I have been very involved in personnel training, starting with training nuclear powerplant supervisors in emergency response; then, more recently, in developing training modules with visuals, a qualification program, and person-to-person training for new hires in several previous positions. In the Navy, I was in the top 5% in Naval Nuclear Power school, I earned two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medals in a single tour, I received a Formal Letter of Commendation from the Strike Group Admiral, I was selected to receive special training in Quality Assurance and to receive an additional Naval Certification as a procedure developer, I advanced early to E6 (without STAR Reenlistment), and I continue to bring all of this drive and conscientious work to the team I am proud to be a part of.
