About Michael Devries

I specialize in helping product teams identify the user-requirements needed to bring products to market and ideate on the next ones. As a user experience and human factors specialist with 25+ year experience, I integrate business objectives, product team needs, and quantitative and qualitative research methods, resulting in delightful, useful, and usable products. Over my career I have conducted user-research on consumer electronics, warnings, vehicles, education platforms, industrial/office equipment, medical devices, aircraft, websites, mobile platforms and apps, and other user interfaces. I specialize in collaborating with product teams to discover and operationally define target user experiences and ideating on products to discover new experiences and business opportunities. I’ve designed a highly efficient method for evaluating multi-page interfaces (e.g, mobile phones & websites). I’ve also designed a method of integrating many user and business data points into a map that can help product teams identify where the most problematic experiences are in a product’s ecosystem. I also define and design world class User Experience/Human Factors research centers. Exponent’s Phoenix User Research Center (PURC), has flexible lab suites that include participant, research observation, and separate client rooms. The vehicle bay suite is connected to a 2-mile enclosed test track so that researchers can remotely observe and communicate with participants in the vehicles. What Drives Me Most! I am an idea enthusiast. I enjoy turning my mind to expansive thinking, regularly looking into “what might come next.” This focus has been the cornerstone of my contributions to the patents I have co-authored, and to other ideas I’ve turned into realities on my own time, for example, a game for couples and a prototype game table to support it. Outside of work, I’m a father of six, outdoorsman, home-improvement enthusiast, teacher, and Tru-Vue film reel collector.
