About Michael Doherty

Dr. Michael Doherty is Emeritus FullProfessor of Veterinary Clinical Studies in the School of Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin. He is a Diplomate and former President of the European College of Bovine Health Management (ECBHM). Michael is also the only European Specialist in Sheep Health in the Republic of Ireland recognised by the European College of Small Ruminant Health Management (ECSRHM). A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, his background is in cattle and sheep practice, including a period at the University of Glasgow's Teaching Unit. Prof. Doherty has managed many funded clinical research programmes, including studies of herd health in conventional and organic Irish dairy herds and he led the UCD clinical team on an EU-funded programme on TSE surveillance. A former Executive Member of Animal Health Ireland (AHI) he was Chair of the AHI Technical Working Group on the control of BVD. He is currently involved in ethnological research on the folklore of sheep health and husbandry and is registered for an MLitt degree in the UCD School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore.
