In July 2011, Michael was appointed as a Deputy High Court Judge of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court. He was appointed as a Queen's Counsel in 2013, and King’s Counsel in 2022. In November 2016, Michael was appointed as a Deputy Justice of Appeal of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court. Michael practised between 1989 and 1996 at 5 Fountain Court and 11 New Square. He relocated to the British Virgin Islands in 1996, and was a founder partner at WSmiths prior to its merger with Ogier in 2007. He retired as a partner in Ogier in 2014 upon the announcement of the sale of Ogier Fiduciary Services to Electra Partners. Michael founded Advocates BVI, now Agon Litigation, in 2014. In 2021, Michael retired from Agon Litigation, and established ABVI Law. Michael is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and has experience of dispute resolution as a deputy Judge in the Hight Court and in the Court of Appeal, as an Arbitrator and as a Referee. Michael read at Nottingham Trent Law School and graduated with an LLB in 1988. He attended the Inns of Court School of Law and was called to the Bar in 1989. He graduated from Harvard Business School in 2010 with an AMP. Practice areas: 1 - Dispute Resolution - Shareholder disputes, insolvency, partnership, corporate, investment funds and trust disputes. 2 - Real Estate - Residential and Commercial - Development - BVI landholding licences - Security interests. 3 - Expert Evidence on BVI law - for use in foreign legal proceedings and arbitration. 4 - Arbitrator - CIArb - accepts appointments as sole arbitrator, and as sole lawyer sitting with two arbitrators with expertise in the subject matter of arbitration. Michael has run (some walking) the Athens, Copenhagen and Mount Desert Island marathons. He followed in the wake of Leander and Lord Byron by swimming the Hellespont from Europe to Asia. Michael regularly competes (or rather participates) in Triathlons in the BVI, has yomped from San Carlos to Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands, has completed a Camino to Santiago de Compostela, and has sailed a yacht from the BVI to Spain. Michael is married to Luisa.
