About Michael Fechtmann

I am the Science and Technology (S&T) Lead for the Fuel Systems and Aerial Refueling Branch in the Subsystems Division of the Air Vehicle Engineering Department. I created and maintain a roadmap for the portfolio of S&T projects in the branch, consisting of new devices, composite materials and structures, manufacturing methods, analysis tools, and test methods. I identify technology gaps, propose new projects, collaborate across branches and divisions, and acquire funding for those projects through internal and external funding sources. I either lead, or lend guidance in executing the funded projects. Many of my projects over the years have been related to manufacturing and analysis of elastomer matrix composite materials for crashworthy and self-sealing fuel bladders for helicopters and tilt-rotor aircraft.
