About Michael Flainek

Senior Project Manager for Transportation Planning and Design Projects with AECOM. Michael has over 40 years of traffic and parking management/operations, and transportation planning experience specializing in complete street designs and cycling and pedestrian operations and facilities design. He has managed a broad spectrum of technical assignments ranging from long-range transportation policy, master plans, to corridor and network planning projects, traffic and parking operations management plans, and detailed traffic operational assessment studies including the Canadian Tire Center Arena Complex – home of the Ottawa Senators. Michael has designed and managed significant roadway projects (including roundabouts), for both private, P3, and public-sector clients. He has significant experience leading teams of multi-disciplinary professionals and stakeholders on complex integrated transportation and environmental infrastructure projects through the Municipal Class EA process, including preparation of federal Environmental Screening Reports including: Ottawa’s Light Rail Pilot Project, Terry Fox Drive – March Road to Eagleson Road, Woodroffe Avenue – Strandherd Road to Fallowfield Road, and Navaho Drive Extension. He was also the Project Manager for numerous secondary planning assignments with significant public input including: Kanata Town Centre Development Plan, Centrepointe Community and Baseline Station Internal Traffic Operational Study. Served as the City of Ottawa’s Director of Traffic and Parking Operations Branch for 8 years, responsible for Traffic Safety and Investigations, Parking Operations and Enforcement, Streetlighting, Neighbourhood Traffic Studies and Traffic Calming Measures, Cycling/Pedestrian Facilities and TDM, Transit Priority, Intersection Modifications Program, Road Design Review, Traffic Control Signals, Signs and Pavement Markings, and Right of Way Management. Michael served on the TAC Chief Engineers Council for three years.
