About Michael Foley

I have been a journalist, writer, broadcaster and teacher and have worked in media development. I have worked in newspapers and as an academic. My area of expertise it is in journalism in emerging democracies. I have worked in Eastern Europe the Caucasus, Central Asia, Africa and the Middle East, both as a journalist and journalism educator and trainer. I hold an MPhil degree and a PhD in media in transitional societies. I have taughth undergraduate and Masters students in journalism and supervise PhD students. I have worked with the BBC World Service Trust (now BBC Action) in major media projects in Bulgaria and Ulkraine and worked with Unicef in Eastern, South Eastern Europe the Caucasus, Central Asia and Africa on a project concerning children's rights and journalism (see below). I have been a consultant for the US media development organisation, IREX in Croatia and Belarus. I have also worked with the International Federation of Journalists in Russia, Macedonian and Palestine, with IREX Europe in Egypt, Unesco in Palestine As well as teaching and training I still work as a journalist mainly commenting on media issues for a range of media, print, broadcast and online. I have also contributed to The Irish Times and Index On Censorship on developments in Eastern Europe. I am the author of Death in Every Paragraph: Journalism & the Great Irish Famine.(2015) Quinnipiac University Press/ Cork UP.
