Engineering Management I speak Engineer. If I had to pick one thing that has allowed me to be successful when working with a technical staff, communication is it. Engineers, like all people, have different preferences for communication. Some like conversation, some like email. Some just like to be left alone and have directions slipped under the door to their office. Understanding how each individual interacts and performs best and leveraging those talents is key in having a strong technical support staff. Being able to communicate the needs of management and the company to engineers, and the scope and intent of engineering initiatives back to management is an area where I excel. Sometimes a concept can be explained easily with a few words, sometimes one needs to use gestures and hand waving. Sometimes charts and graphs can provide ample explanation, and sometimes a sketch or picture is the only way to represent an idea so everyone can understand. I have the ability to use all those methods, to make the technical understandable, so my staff contributes to the company’s success.
