About Michael Goodwill

My commitment to diversity is a part of my daily life. I strive to provide understanding and knowledge to people in all parts of the community and create an environment where people can continue to learn. Surrounding myself with people who are open to new ideas and thoughts is important, but also surrounding myself with people who are willing to listen is equally valued and accepted. It is important to me that I learn new perspectives and ideas from others. This part of learning is invaluable to my work and my life. Diversity is a key function to multicultural understanding and appreciation. It is what strengthens our community and links ideas and people together. It is this understanding that contributes to awareness and knowledge. By helping to break down barriers, diversity helps people and communities grow. Diversity allows communities and people to recognize the value of different experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives. My understanding and experiences have given me a great appreciation of diversity and how it can pull people together, creating an optimal learning environment. What I can contribute to a diverse learning community is reflected in how I live my life. I enjoy the process of discovery. I embrace the differences that exist between people and value individuality. I am supportive of people’s differences and challenges and refuse to compromise other’s beliefs, morals, and ideals. My integrity gives me strength, patience and an open mind and allows me to be a mentor and a leader. I feel that as a member of the community, it is my responsibility to broaden the minds of others and help them see things differently. My easy going, calming manner allows me to embrace this effort. I have learned that actively listening and communicating are two important tools in making this happen. When these things are achieved, we have become an effective, diverse community.
