About Michael Grimes

I'm a Data Engineer and PhD graduate with a specialist background in geospatial data, environmental modelling, and climate science. My expertise spans Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, Machine Learning, and glaciology, underpinned by an MSc in GIS (Distinction) from the University of Leeds and a doctorate focused on environmental change in Greenland. My PhD research examined late 20th to early 21st century Greenlandic glacier and landscape change in response to climate warming, using GIS and satellite data to quantify environmental dynamics across the ice-sheet-free and peripheral glaciated landscapes of Greenland. This built on a strong conceptual and technical foundation developed during my MSc, where I explored geospatial modelling for diverse applications including flood risk assessment, site suitability, and environmental impact analysis. Currently, I work as a Data Engineer at Groundsure, where I develop and maintain geospatial data pipelines and environmental risk models using Python, SQL, and PostGIS. I bring together scientific rigour, spatial analysis, and software engineering to deliver actionable insights that support environmental decision-making and risk communication.
