About Michael Grimm

Michael Grimm served as the Associate Director for Natural Hazards. In this role, Mike led the United States Geological Survey (USGS) hazards planning and response activities and oversees the Coastal and Marine Hazards & Resources, Earthquake Hazards, Global Seismographic Network, Geomagnetism, Landslide Hazards, and Volcano Hazards Programs. Prior to joining the USGS, Mike served with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for over 26 years. Mike served as Deputy Associate Administrator (acting), the senior career executive, in the Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration, leading the delivery of the agency’s risk management, mitigation, and flood insurance programs. Prior to that role, he served as the Assistant Administrator of both the Risk Management Directorate and the Mitigation Directorate. Mike also directed FEMA’s Individual Assistance Division and was responsible for disaster response and recovery programs. Mike held other governmental positions with the City of Fort Collins, Colorado, emergency and floodplain management program; the State of Wyoming, Department of Environmental Quality inspecting coal and uranium mines; and the USGS National Research Program, in Denver, Colorado studying paleoflood hydrology. Mike holds a master’s degree from Colorado State University's Department of Earth Resources focused on fluvial geomorphology. Mike holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont in environmental studies with a minor in geology. He holds a Certificate in Public Leadership from the Brookings Institution and Washington University in St. Louis, Olin Business School.
