Background
About Michael Hajek
Michael Hajek took an MEng degree in Engineering Physics before researching for his DSc in Health Physics and Nuclear Safety at the Vienna University of Technology, Austria. He started his academic career as Junior Researcher with the Institute of Space Dosimetry at the Austrian Society for Aerospace Medicine/Life Sciences in Space in 1998. In he joined the Institute of Atomic and Subatomic Physics, Vienna, Austria, as Research Fellow and Adjunct Lecturer. Following guest scientist appointments at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), Chiba, Japan, he accepted the position of Assistant Professor at the Vienna University of Technology in 2006, where he remained until appointed as External Dosimetry Specialist at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2013. As of 2016, Michael progressed to the role of Group Leader heading the IAEA Individual Monitoring Service. Michael has taught courses in health physics and radiation effects at all levels. At the IAEA, he delivers radiation safety training to occupationally exposed workers including nuclear safeguards inspectors. Michael is an experimental radiation physicist with interests in radiation effects and defects in solids. He has made contributions to the development of bioequivalent dosimetry, the theory of thermoluminescent efficiency to heavy charged particles and the assessment of radiation exposure in human spaceflight. His most recent efforts have focused on characterization of radiophotoluminescent and etched track detector systems for personal dosimetry. Michael is the former President of the Austrian Radiation Protection Association (2012–16) and a member of the International Solid-State Dosimetry Organization. He has served on several international scientific advisory committees. He has authored or co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed scientific publications, 15 book chapters and more than 150 conference abstracts and presentations. He has also served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal "STRAHLENSCHUTZ aktuell" and, as of 2022, has accepted invitation to join the Editorial Board of the science journal "Radiation Measurements". Michael was named one of the most valued reviewers by the editors of "Radiation Measurements" in 2014 and 2015. ResearcherID: E-8336-2010 SciVerse Scopus Author ID: 7102388225 ORCID:
