About Michael Hobson

In 2017 I launched Hobson Legal as a specialist commercial finance law firm. Hobson Legal's expertise and skills are unique outside of large national law firms. We are agile, innovative and responsive to our client's requirements. In 2025 we were recognized by Best Lawyers as a Tier 1 Firm in Brisbane the area of banking and finance. For over 25 years I have been helping financiers, investors, borrowers, guarantors and other parties on all aspects of commercial transactions with recognised expertise in finance, securities and compliance issues. My goal is to understand my client's objectives and the critical elements of the underlying transaction (both commercial and legal) to ensure the intended outcomes are achieved. I have extensive experience across the finance, corporate, commercial, property, hospitality and gaming, agribusiness, resources and retail sectors. I document and advise in respect of acquisitions, disposals, joint ventures, debt, equity, mezzanine debt, security trusts, syndications, participations and inter creditor arrangements. I also act for financiers and borrowers in disputes, secured recoveries, receiverships and mortgagee sales and advise on mortgagee’s and receiver’s duties under the Corporations Act and the Property Law Act. I can also assist in relation to compliance with the National Consumer Credit Protection Act, Personal Property Securities Act, Banking Code of Practice, Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act, Privacy Act and other relevant legislation.
