I am a scientist and agricultural engineer by education, who works as a University Assistant at the Otto-Loewi Research Centre at the Medical University of Graz (Austria). I am leading a research project examining functional and compositional aspects of the so-called “good” cholesterol. Most of us have heard about “good” cholesterol and how protective it is for our heart and vessels. But recent discoveries have pointed out that the “good” cholesterol can turn bad, thereby losing its cardio-protective properties and promoting inflammation and coronary artery disease. Our research is focused on identifying pathways which lead to the generation of this so-called dysfunctional HDL.
