About Michael J. Ryan

Dr. Michael Ryan has over 25 years combined consulting and research experience in aquatic biology and ecotoxicology having researched major contaminants in the environment. He worked in association with the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada from 1994-2005 at the Canada Centre for Inland Waters (Burlington) and the Freshwater Institute (Winnipeg), but also has past experience serving provincial government institutions (Nickel District Conservation Authority, Ontario Ministry of Environment and Energy), consulting firms (2005-2011) as well as the private industrial sector (Imperial Oil, ALS Environmental). Michael's science background includes whole ecosystem sampling, research in sub-Arctic climates, aquatic environmental effects, studies of water quality (surface and ground), sediment quality, aquatic invertebrates, and fish. Formal research experience includes classical toxicology experiments, experimental design and analytical chemistry of stable isotopes, metals, organochlorines and petroleum compounds. Recent experience with the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan includes science advisory roles on a variety of program policies. He has held past positions in teaching biology and outdoor education to both general public and students up to the university level as well as providing extensive technical training to colleagues in government and consulting industries. A more broad expertise involves both scientific and non-science studies management such as designing, budgeting, and implementing regulatory compliance projects, peer review or authoring technical documents and even assessments of client services data for a financial industry client. He has also provided technical knowledge and support for Environmental Assessments and risk assessments. He is accomplished in client services and various aspects of project management.
