Background
About Michael Kaplan
I’m a PhD candidate in Sociocultural Anthropology at George Washington University, where I research transnational mobility, Islamic movements, and social belonging. My doctoral project explores Turkey's emerging role across global Muslim communities and involves in-depth, long-term ethnographic fieldwork with the diverse migrant communities that intersect there. My research has been supported by Fulbright-Hays, the Institute for Middle East Studies, and the Institute for Ethnographic Research, among others. In addition to my own research, I enjoy helping others shape and share their ideas, whether through teaching or editing. I’ve taught undergraduate courses at George Washington University and through Georgetown University's Prisons and Justice Initiative, guiding diverse student populations in refining their critical thinking and writing skills. My editorial experience includes roles with Anthropological Quarterly and the Middle East Research and Information Project (MERIP). I'm here to collaborate and explore new opportunities across academia, publishing, and beyond. Let’s connect!
