About Michael Kilner

I am a professional ecologist and keen amateur naturalist interested in all aspects of the flora and fauna of Scotland, and beyond. I volunteer for the Scottish Wildlife Trust. I am passionate about environmental and outdoor education, and about invertebrates. Very happy in my current role, but always looking to network with other in the ecology and conservation fields, especially if you are in Scotland or have used Caledonian Conservation before. Key Skills • Expert invertebrate biologist, specialising in arachnids (spiders & harvestmen). • Experienced in NVC and Phase 1 botanical surveys. • Experience of dawn and dusk bat surveys (I do not hold a bat license) and leading guided bat walks. • Experience of protected species surveys. • Member of British Arachnological Society, and formerly part of BAS Council and Education Committee. • Member of British Bryological Society • Member of Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland • Proficient in standard computer software packages (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), as well as ArcGIS. • Proficient and confident public speaker with many years of experience. Other Skills • Studied for PhD in invertebrate cryobiology (1993-1996) at University Marine Biological Station, Millport – not completed. • Teaching experience at all levels from Postgraduate degree courses to pre-school education. • Familiar with traditional didactic teaching, and with distance learning and mixed-mode education formats. • Experience of academic management, course design, and course accreditation/ validation process. • Founder of South Wales Arachnid Group, now South Wales Invertebrate Group. • Former coach of the Wales Under 12 chess team. Twice Gwent Under 1600 grade chess champion. • Holder of a full, clean driving licence since 1995. • I am CRB checked for working with children (2014). • Experienced in HR sickness administration processes and data analysis.
