Background

About Michael Kirkland

My passion for construction related fields came about from a very young age from working alongside family members renovating and refurbishing small residential properties. I have always been fascinated about how buildings are built and developed a key interest in anything related to the built environment. During my time spent working in the retail sector, I had the pleasure of witnessing the iconic Shard building being built from inception to completion. This brief period of my life inherently led me to become fascinated and intrigued about how buildings were designed and supported which in turn, led me to enrol on a Foundation Civil Engineering course at College and then make the big leap to study Civil Engineering at the University of Brighton.From my time spent in higher education at the University of Brighton, I have learned a broad range of core Civil Engineering topics with a keen interest in Geotechnics, Structural Design & Project Planning. I have had the opportunity to work in group-based projects which have helped me improve many of my soft skills whilst, also learning the technical and theoretical aspects which underpin the design of structural elements and the codes used to design them. I have also had the opportunity to undertake an industrial placement at ISG construction and was predominantly involved in their flagship project (20 Old Bailey refurbishment) assisting and managing the steelwork and concrete packages which further developed my skills and knowledge.Having just recently graduated from the University of Brighton and obtaining a 1st Class degree classification, I have also been awarded " The Dr Harry Arshi memorial award" for the dissertation project receiving the highest mark within the field of Geotechnics. Having also acquired a graduate position at VolkerStevin I hope to further develop my skills and knowledge in aid to one day become a Chartered Engineer.
