Background
About Michael Kitcher
I am a materials scientist and engineer with strong research interests in elucidating and engineering chiral interactions in magnetic thin films. Using a synergy of experimental characterization, analytical modeling, and micromagnetic simulations, I aim to elucidate how symmetry controls chirality in spin textures and how spontaneous symmetry breaking can engender deterministic chiral dynamics as well as highly efficient spin transport. To this end, I engineer the symmetry of magnetic materials and target devices in light of these structural-property-performance relationships—developing and leveraging novel growth techniques along the way. God helping me, I hope to advance our understanding of chiral phenomena in magnetic materials and birth impactful technologies that address far-reaching societal issues such as the surging energy demands of computing. In parallel with my research vision, I am passionate about teaching materials science and engineering to the next generation of students, mentoring a team of students and postdocs to take on the challenge of energy-efficient chiral spintronics. Whether in the classroom, behind a microscope, or in an advising meeting, I hope, with God's help, to equip them with the tools, knowledge, and skills they need to solve complex problems, to foster a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect for everyone. I also look to partner with and learn from other educators to achieve this goal. Finally, I aim to do my part in making the materials science & engineering community one that empowers everyone to bring their full range of abilities, knowledge, and experiences to bear in tackling the important issues our society faces. I believe we must all address injustice and discrimination where we see it, seek reconciliation and mutual understanding, and make a difference in our communities even if it starts with one person. It is my prayer that by leveraging my unique experiences, gifts, and opportunities, I can empower people within MSE and beyond to live fulfilling lives and bring the positive impact to our world that they are uniquely positioned to make.
