Background
About Michael Leneghan
Since joining eSmart Networks, I have progressed from a technical administrative role into a permanent CAD Technician position and, more recently, into delivering full Low Voltage (LV) design projects as I work toward promotion to LV Design Engineer. My responsibilities have grown significantly in both technical depth and scope, supported by structured learning and a strong commitment to professional development and recognised industry standards. Initially supporting a national EV charging framework, I quickly took full ownership of site plans—identifying cable routes, siting feeder pillars and chargers, and resolving constraints collaboratively with engineers, civils, operations, and clients. My involvement led to reduced revision cycles and faster plan turnarounds. I introduced standardised CAD templates, dynamic blocks, and layout practices that improved consistency and aligned with DNO and IDNO G81 specifications. Where applicable, designs ensure wider compliance with ENA policies such as G59, P28, and P29. All deliverables are prepared in accordance with our NERS-accredited safety and QA procedures, ensuring they are technically robust, traceable, and suitable for adoption. My role has since expanded to delivering complete LV design packages, including site plans, single-line diagrams (SLDs), engineering reports, flood risk assessments, and design risk assessments. These are produced in AutoCAD and supported by Windebut calculations to assess voltage drop and earth loop impedance. This process has enabled me to value engineer projects—for example, reducing cable sizes while maintaining compliance and thermal headroom—resulting in cost savings for both client and IDNO. To support this transition, I have completed an OCN NI Level 3 Award in Building Information Modelling (Revit) and the City & Guilds–accredited EA Technology Power Systems Foundations course. I am also studying part-time toward an HNC/HND in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Manufacturing, having completed Year 1 successfully. These programmes have strengthened my understanding of network composition, distribution principles, and compliance frameworks. I continue to support junior CAD technicians by providing quality control and mentoring on As-Laid and legal drawings, ensuring outputs meet technical, regulatory, and operational requirements. My progression from document editing to delivering compliant LV designs demonstrates my ability to apply engineering principles, collaborate effectively, and deliver practical, safe, and adoptable solutions.
