About Michael McIntosh
Dr. McIntosh is an experienced and competent practitioner and is also an established scholar and presenter. Dr. McIntosh served successfully as the Principal Investigator/Director of the Hampton University Leadership Academy, which was funded by School Leadership Program grant ($2.7 million) from the US Department of Education (2010 -2015). The focus of the Leadership Academy was the development of effective leadership skills in school administrators in all stages of their professional career with a focus on high-need school districts in rural and urban settings in Virginia. Dr. McIntosh has served as an exemplary school administrator having led successful school turnaround efforts in some of the most challenging school districts; including the District of Columbia; Allendale SC & West-Helena AR. He completed several highly-regarded professional development programs like the Principals Institute at Harvard University and Principal Mentor Training Program designed by the National Association of Elementary School Principals. Dr. McIntosh was recently selected (2020) as a Fulbright Scholar by the U.S. Department of State. As a Fulbright, he is currently working with the nation of Egypt to improve their national school system. Dr. McIntosh is a currently a key team member on the Wallace Foundations 5 Year/$4.6 million University Principal Preparation Initiative at Virginia State University in the Department of Educational Leadership and over the past year worked as a school improvement consultant with school districts in Virginia, North Carolina and the City of Philadelphia School System. His current articles appear in national journals and publications and focus on improving the outcomes of marginalized populations through social justice leadership. Recent articles include:"Compound Fractures: Healing the Intersectionality of Racism, Classism, and Trauma in Schools with a Trauma-Informed Approach as Part of a Social Justice Framework” Journal of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies 2019 & “From Ally to Activist: Embracing Activism as an essential component of Social Justice Educational Leadership to Combat Injustice in American Schools” – Journal of Leadership Equity and Research (2020). Dr. McIntosh has presented his research at major conferences that target higher education researchers in addition to educational leadership practitioners. All of his sessions represent a clarion call to action for principals and other educational leaders to address issues of equity by embracing the full spectrum of leadership including activism.
