Background
About Michael Mears
From a laborer on an asphalt crew to Chief of Police—and now President of NIM—I’ve spent my life on the front lines of responsibility. Every chapter of my career has been shaped by challenge, pressure, and the need to make sound decisions when it matters most. My journey began in the trades, where I learned early the value of hard work and team accountability. I later transitioned into law enforcement, serving in nearly every capacity imaginable: patrol officer, detective, evidence technician, accident reconstructionist, K-9 handler, undercover operative, and ultimately, homicide investigator. These roles required precision, discretion, and the ability to lead during crisis. I eventually became Sergeant, then Chief of Police—roles where leadership was tested daily. I was also entrusted with dual responsibilities as both Police and Fire Chief, further deepening my understanding of cross-disciplinary emergency management. After retiring from policing, I brought that same mission-driven mindset to NIM. I started as a project manager, then became Operations Manager, then Vice President, and today, serve as President. I also sit on the Carylon Corporation Compliance Council, where I contribute to safety governance and regulatory strategy across a national footprint. What ties all of this together—whether in a squad car, on a fire ground, or running a multimillion-dollar business—is the ability to lead people through adversity, to think clearly under pressure, and to create systems that work even when everything else doesn’t. My experience has forged a leadership style that values integrity, critical thinking, and decisive action. I’ve developed a deep respect for regulatory compliance, workforce safety, and operational discipline. I don’t believe in shortcuts. I believe in standards—and I work to make sure those standards are met and exceeded, every day. This life has taught me how to build trust, solve problems, and deliver results that matter.
