About Michael Milton

For the past 15 years, I have taught Social Studies at Burlington High School - World History, AP World History and US History. I am interested not only in teaching the content of my discipline but the transferrable skills that history lends itself to - analysis, interpretation, and writing. History is not simply a series of names and dates to memorize, but a sometimes murky series of events to discuss and debate. For the past few years, I have also worked on various school-wide committees to develop common vocabulary of skills for our students to develop - trying to build more connections between departments! As a side project, I co-host a podcast called Visions of Education partnering with the National Council for the Social Studies and the journal Theory & Research in Social Education to discuss recently published articles with the authors as a way to help spread awareness of current trends in education. Prior to to teaching, I was an AmeriCorps member and staff member at City Year in Cleveland, OH and Providence, RI. My final role at City Year Rhode Island (now City Year Providence) was the Senior Program and Training Manager. I was responsible for the training of 40 AmeriCorps Members serving the City of Providence, managing the ongoing relationships with non-profit organizations and school partners, and directly overseeing 20 AmeriCorps Members. Seeing the transformation of our members and the transformations they made in the classrooms and after school programs throughout Providence will always be one of the highlights of my career.
