About Michael Naimark

Michael Naimark has the good fortune of being a leader and collaborator at new media labs and studios at their birth moments, going back several decades. These include Google’s VR division, the Apple Multimedia Lab, Paul Allen's Interval Research, Lucasfilm’s interactive division, and Atari Research; and NYU Shanghai’s Interactive Media Arts program, USC Cinema’s Interactive Media and Games Division, and the MIT Media Lab. Michael also has a long track record of making stuff early. His name appears on the Wikipedia pages for Virtual Reality (twice), Projection Mapping, New Media Artists, Interactive Artists, Cinematographers from the United States, and The Hackers Conference. He’s listed as lead inventor on 16 issued patents relating to cameras, displays, haptics, and live video; and has authored over 100 publications, including with MIT Press, Addison Wesley, and Springer. He’s given presentations in over 20 countries and at such venues as Siggraph, the Aspen Design Conference, and the National Museum of Singapore; and has shown in scores of art exhibitions around the world. His works are in the permanent collections of the Exploratorium, the ZKM Centre for Arts and Media, and the American Museum of the Moving Image. Michael recently launched a positive-impact-driven independent practice after spending four years at NYU Shanghai, where he developed a VR/AR curriculum and directed research into glasses-free 3D tele-immersion.
