Background
About Michael Novick
I’m a Brooklyn-based educator with a background in Cinema and Cultural studies, and I’ve always believed that teaching is, in many ways, like filmmaking. Both require creativity, resourcefulness, and the ability to bring an abstract idea to life—whether it’s turning a lesson into an interactive experience or transforming a vision into a film. As a 6th and 7th grade STEAM teacher in NYC, I create engaging, interactive learning experiences that challenge students to think critically, experiment, and solve problems. I have a particular passion for media literacy, helping students navigate the digital world thoughtfully and responsibly. I strive to make learning hands-on and inquiry-driven, encouraging students to explore, create, and innovate, even within the constraints of limited resources. Much like filmmaking, where constraints often lead to the most inventive solutions—whether it’s building a makeshift dolly out of a wheelchair or constructing a steadicam from plumbing supplies—I embrace the challenge of working within high-needs educational settings. I believe that these limitations foster creativity and resilience, both for myself as an educator and for my students as learners. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the belief that learning should be an immersive, thought-provoking experience. I get excited about teaching, and that enthusiasm is contagious—helping students uncover their full potential in the face of any challenge. When I’m not teaching, I’m exploring upstate New York, watching films, and spending time with my two dogs—Charlie and Sally. I also serve as a “Big Brother” to a young mentee, helping him navigate life’s challenges.
