About Michael Oldaker

Four years into a PhD in Music History and ten years into my university education, I decided to make a radical shift. I decided that I would leave the world of academia and dive into the world of business. I thought,"why not apply my analytical thinking and interest in human behaviour in area with greater earning potential, and opportunity for rapid development?"So I made the leap into a market research program and my first role in a boutique data and analytics firm. It was a bold move, and it was the right one. But I realized very quickly that- I didn't really understand much about data- I didn't really know much about businessIt has quite a journey, but through sheer interest and the desire to learn rapidly, I've gone from a role in client services, to senior technical roles in analytics, to data and analytics management. Over the past 5 years, I've also had the opportunity to teach over 100 classes in data analytics, data science, and python programming. After many years, I can see that my beginnings in academic research and music performance were not separate, unrelated experiences as my work now. It's because of how I think naturally and my background that I can bring the following to analytics consulting engagements and teaching- ability to manage complexity - drive tangible requirements and solutions for problems with highly complex data aggregation, business logic, and analytic approaches - ability to break down and communicate concepts - assign and monitor tasks in large-scale projects- ability to teach a range of audiences - break down concepts in the industry with ease for those with limited or no exposure
