About Michael Owens

My research broadly covers preclinical and translational pharmacology related to novel and/or more effective treatments for psychiatric illness. My interests center upon the long-term molecular and cellular mechanisms of antidepressant, anxiolytic, and antipsychotic drugs, particularly as they relate to neuropeptide transmitter systems as targets for novel pharmacotherapeutics. Research also focuses on biological markers in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disease, laboratory tests to optimize current psychotropic drug therapy, and the pharmacokinetics of drugs in laboratory animals. Most recently, we are studying clinically-relevant prenatal and developmental pharmacology examining transcriptomic and epigenomic markers. I have 181 original research or review articles and 30 book chapters. My h-Index is 60 and I have over 90 invited lectures or presentations. I have had continuous funding from federal and private sources for over 25 years. I have been PI of 40 grants from federal, foundation or corporate sources totaling >$10 million in direct costs as PI. I served as Vice-Chair for Research in the department from 2009-2016 and helped oversee and advise my chair on our research portfolio which was over $13 million in NIH funding in the most recent year for which data are available (2015). The majority of this funding is for basic and translational research. Our department has been ranked in the top-20 nationally during this entire time. I also took the lead on new recruitments for research-intensive new faculty.
