Background
About Michael Rahmatoulin
Michael is an international designer based in Austin, TX. He is a recent graduate from the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture, receiving a Master of Architecture in December 2019 that focused on digital documentation and the creative re-use of buildings, as well as a Bachelor of Architecture in May 2016. While at UTSOA he bridged the disciplines of architecture, technology, and historic preservation, exploring how designers can better utilize the existing environment and digital tools to create a richer urban fabric. His previous experience includes a position with Page Southerland Page - a national architecture firm in Austin where he worked on commercial projects in master planning, housing, office and retail. Notable projects he's worked on with Page include the redevelopment of Block 71 in Austin's downtown district and a new residential tower at Fountain Place in Dallas. During his graduate studies, he held teaching assistant positions for Visual Communications, Environmental Controls I, Tech Lab Assistant, and Videographer for the School of Architecture. For his Master's Project, Michael addressed the de-facto border in his hometown of Nicosia through a proposed urban plan aiming to reconnect the inhabitants through a series of street and cultural heritage interventions. By providing a more down to earth approach that engages the individual, the interventions could act as catalysts for future growth and provide a path towards the gradual dissolution of the buffer zone dividing the capital city. A case study from the project proposed a Culinary & Digital Heritage Center that adapted an abandoned police station along the city walls into a vibrant center for interaction.
