About Michael Rose

Michael graduated with a degree in journalism from City University, London, just as the World Wide Web was in its infancy. Before that he was a keen bulletin-board user and remembers his 8-bit browser and 9400bps connection fondly. After leaving university at the beginning of the dot com boom, Michael worked for AOL to take on the role of launch editor of the online portal for the recently acquired Netscape. Head-hunted for a prominent design agency Michael worked as launch editor on a series of high-profile projects for clients including British Telecom and the BBC. Michael has also freelanced as a web editor for a wide range of startups and established brands: DSL Times, Future Publishing (T3, Create magazine) and EMAP publications (Mojo and Q magazine). Michael has since studied for an MA in Philosophy of Cognitive Science, completed foundation and teacher training in Tibetan Buddhism, and completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education in 2012. Michael has worked in education for 10-years as Primary School teacher, including 2 years focusing on Special Educational and Social & Emotional Needs bringing Buddhist wisdom, compassion and mindfulness into UK schools. During lockdown Michael was was director of a homeschool project and Michael continues works with young men and boys in his role at JourneymanUK - helping build communities of men to mentor young boys in rites of passage and offering mentoring to teens and young men. Specialities: Teaching, Coaching, Mentoring, Facilitation, Circle and Space Holding. Delivering education programs and curricula while nurturing relationships and fostering learning journeys in 1:1s, small groups and classes of children. Michael is passionate about bringing both tried and tested wisdom and modern evidence-based innovation into the classroom or private tutoring, helping children develop their digital citizenship, using content strategy and design, copywriting, and learning to stay safe using social media. Michael has developed skills and experience working with a wide range of children in classrooms and homeschool settings, including special educational needs, adverse childhood experiences, trauma, school trauma and exclusion; working to help children with transitions e.g from primary to secondary, homeschool to school (or vice versa) and from school to school after exclusion. His "Mindful and Kindful" approach has been developed through decades of Buddhist practice, his awareness of trauma in education and belief that children need to feel happy and safe before they can really begin to learn.
