About Michael Ross

Experienced conservation and science writer and former journalist with 20 years experience covering conflict in the Middle East, the early post-Mao era in China, and foreign policy and national security debates on Capitol Hill, initially for UPI and then the Los Angeles Times. Two decades of wars, coups and earthquakes (and partisan preening in Congress) convinced me that journalism wasn't saving the world any more and I took up conservation as my cause, spending 16 years at World Wildlife Fund, followed by a brief stint at Ocean Conservancy. In between all of that was also 2+ years with the U.N. focused on famine and humanitarian relief. Now embarking on the Third Act: media relations consulting and freelance writing (speeches, funding proposals, op-eds, reports, talking points, etc). Areas of interest and expertise include environmental security, resource/consumption and footprint issues, climate change, foreign policy, conflict, sustainable development and humanitarian relief. Miscellaneous details: President, Foreign Correspondents Association of Beijing ('83-84); Chairman, Congressional Standing Committee of Correspondents ('94-95).
