About Michael Ruddick

Michael is a Barrister within the Crown Advocacy Unit in the CPS. Michael appears in the Crown Court on a range of different matters. He prosecutes list and trial work in the Magistrates Court. Before starting pupillage Michael was a Legal Adviser to the Justices in the Magistrates Court from late 2019 until 2024. As a Justices’ Legal Adviser he provided advice on law, practice and procedure in court to the judiciary on a daily basis. As such, Michael possesses an extensive and detailed knowledge of criminal and magistrate law, as well as the ability to distil and explain complex legal points for a lay audience. Before becoming a Justices’ Legal Adviser, Michael worked as a self-employed advocate in the county courts, where he acted for both Claimants and Defendants on a daily basis. Michael carried out small-claims trials, mortgage possession applications, contract disputes and applications to set aside judgments, amongst other things, garnering praise for his ‘powers of persuasion’ by the judiciary. Michael is a recipient of the Sir Thomas More Award in the 2015/16 Lincoln’s Inn Scholarships, and a scholar of the Inn. Whilst studying he achieved the ‘Outstanding’ Grade in all his criminal advocacy exams on the bar course and the joint highest mark in the year in the Equity and Trusts assignment at university.
