About Michael Scotto

I am a Retired FDNY Lieutenant, as of 11/30/2021. I was appointed in 1979, and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1997, I have operated at most every type of emergency. This includes surviving the tragedy on 9/11. I was the Executive Officer in Ladder 58. Some of my responsibilities included the maintaining the Building Inspection program, updating members on tactics and procedures, firefighting operations, and all areas of daily responsibility. Having worked in Manhattan Engine 18, Brooklyn Ladder 157, and the Bronx, I've trained and educated firefighters and civilians on the various aspects of leadership, safety, operations, tactics, and fire prevention. I also instructed several times a month at Annual Education Day on tactics and strategy along with live fire training ( flashover ). I’ve written articles for the NYS Fire Chiefs Magazine. I have also done several podcasts, namely FDNY Pro with BC Mulray FDNY, Fire Engineering Podcast with Dan McGlynn and Getting Salty podcast episode #85. I have given lecture classes at conferences around the country on Leadership, Ladder Officer Responsibilities, Private Dwelling Fires, Bowstring Truss Structures, Rapid Intervention Team, Top Floor Fire Operations. Some of the venues are the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) 2011, 2023, Firehouse Expo 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, the Delaware Volunteers Firefighter's Conf. 2008, and Westchester N.Y. Vol Firefighter Conf. 2009, NYS Fire Chiefs Conference 2021, 2022 2023. I've also trained the USMC at Camp Pendleton CA, and the USAF Infantry at Camp Moody GA, on rescue ops. As an American Heart Assoc. Certified BLS CPR Instructor, I train students ranging from Doctors to baby sitters. I am a Nationally Certified Level I and II Fire Instructor, a New York State Fire Instructor and an Orange County NY Fire Instructor. I instruct Fire Officer, Truck, Firefighter 1, Modern Fire Behavior, Search and Survival. I also worked at the Center for Terrorism and Disaster Preparedness as a Master Exercise Practitioner (MEP). As a MEP I evaluate, design, Incident Action Plans (IAP's) for all man-made and naturally disasters involving public and private facilities.
