Background
About Michael Shotwell
I am enjoying teaching Mississippi History and World History at Columbia Academy. I am ever grateful for my prior experience and will miss my former students and fellow colleagues but I am very much enjoying this new endeavor. Columbia Academy is a fine school with an excellent staff of teachers and administrators who have already made me feel at home. The students are eager, willing and very able to learn and possess a thirst for knowledge. I am glad to have this great opportunity. We are planning projects and a couple of field trips to add to an already good foundation. Last year I taught Social Studies for the 5th & 6th grades at The New William J. Berry Elementary School at Heidelberg. Early in the school year my students did a project on the Pre-Columbian, Indigenous tribes of North America. Many chose to do their projects on the tribes of the South. The students were introduced to the US Constitution and the three branches of government. Towards the end of the school year the project was to learn and recite the Preamble to the US Constitution. I was proud of the excellent job they did while they achieved a sense of accomplishment. The year prior I was a first year teacher in the public school system and taught Mississippi Studies and Eastern Hemisphere at Heidelberg Jr. High School. I recommended ten of my highest achievers who excelled in leadership to a nationwide leadership program. I was glad to hear encouraging things from parents on this a year later. I have taken several Master's Level courses at William Carey University and am a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University. I have always wanted to teach so at this stage in my life I am doing just exactly that. I desire to be the very best social studies teacher I can be and I want to help my students to be the very best students they can be. I live south of Ellisville in Jones County in the country and I am active in Ellisville Presbyterian Church, ARP.
