About Michael Sides

Michael Sides recently graduated with honors from Arizona State University with a bachelor of science degree in sociology. His undergraduate research at this institution has delved into a broad variety of topics, including but not limited to technology, child and adolescent development, and social theory. He is keenly interested in the application of sociological research to other fields, and he endeavors to pursue masters level education to this end. He is passionate about coffee, and has taken strides in understanding every aspect of the industry from harvesting to serving. He has worked for several coffee shops as both a barista and in management, is a member of the Specialty Coffee Association of America, and enjoys the craft of latte art. Michael has extensive training and experience in the field of music performance. He has worked as professional trombonist and has years of undergraduate-level music performance and education training. In one form or another, he has been a student of music since age six. Michael has over fourteen years of experience with the trombone. He has studied applied trombone with Charles Caputo, DMA; Rodney Martel, principal bass trombonist of the Virginia Symphony; and Tim Owner, principal trombonist of the Australian Opera. Michael's extensive and varied experience in the field of music performance includes 11 years in wind bands, 8 years in symphony orchestras, 7 years of playing with jazz bands, and a multitude of small ensembles. In addition to his performance qualifications, he has studied conducting and wind literature under Dr. Mark Reimer. Michael has performed in concert with the U.S. Army TRADOC Band, the Virginia Symphony, and as a founding member of the Cardinal Brass Quintet.
