About Michael Silverman

As Smithbucklin's Chief Legal Officer, I bridge business vision with sound judgment, leading our legal function in ways that fuel innovation, resilience, and sustainable growth. In my world, legal is never the brake; it’s the frame that helps great ideas hold up under pressure. It’s the trusted enabler of what the business can do, not just a guardian of what it can’t. My role is to connect the dots between risk and opportunity, guiding our executive team, board, and often our clients to move decisively and strategically in complex environments. I leverage my work as a means to build and strengthen relationships—internally and externally, individually and institutionally. I believe every interaction, no matter how big or small, is an opportunity to reinforce trust and connection. Despite my title, I view my role principally as a business executive, one with responsibilities that include legal affairs. During my tenure, I’ve also led several operational areas, including stewardship of Smithbucklin’s ESOP, the vehicle that enables 100% employee ownership and fosters a culture that delivers lasting benefits to our clients and employees. Beyond Smithbucklin, I’ve found fulfillment in volunteer leadership. I currently serve as Secretary-Treasurer and a board member of the AMC Institute, following similar roles with other charitable and professional organizations. I volunteer because I believe leadership isn’t just about what we build within our own organizations, but also about the contributions we make to the future of the industries and communities to which we belong. That's why I’m inspired by Smithbucklin’s purpose-driven work in partnering with associations and professional societies to create opportunities for others to contribute to their communities, cultivate meaningful peer interactions, and help industries and professions reach their highest potential. I’m a passionate advocate for the association management model as the most effective framework for nonprofits to fulfill their missions, successfully operate, and create space for people to grow, belong, and thrive. On a personal level, I draw energy from human connection. Whether it’s the shared emotion of a live concert or sporting event, collaborating with colleagues, or time with family and friends, these are the moments that give me clarity and fuel my sense of purpose. In the end, it’s about people; the trust we build, the way we lead and listen, and the commitment we make to creating something enduring. That’s what drives me, and what I strive to bring to every role I play.
