About Michael Stanton

Holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics (1967), a master's degree in applied mathematics (1968) and a doctorate in Mathematics (1971) from the University of Cambridge. Currently he is Network Scientist at the Brazilian Research and Education Network, RNP, since 2018. Before this he was Director of Research and Development (initially Innovation) at RNP, since 2002. Before this he worked as a research professor at 3 Brazilian universities, until his retirement in 2014. Between 2002 and 2014, he was on secondment from UFF to RNP, to serve as Director of R&D, a post he continued to exercise until 2018. He has experience in Computer Science, focusing on Numerical Mathematics, Computer Systems, Programming Languages, Distributed Systems and Computer Networks. In this latter area, he has been active in network architectures and network engineering. Beginning in 1989, he became involved in designing and building computer networks on many different scales: department, campus, metropolitan area, national and international. These projects include the corporate networks of PUC/RJ and UFF, the metro network in Rio de Janeiro (Rede-Rio) in its Bitnet and initial Internet phases, the testbed network of Project GIGA, the metro network in Belém (MetroBel), and some of the versions of the RNP national and RedClara (Latin American regional) networks. At RNP, as Director of R&D, he oversaw the programme of development, with the particpation of university research groups, of Advanced Internet services for RNP users. In addition he has played a role in the technological evolution of the networks, in the adoption of optical and software-defined networking. He has also sought to engage RNP and the national research community in networking in international collaboração projects, most recently in the area of Future Internet
