Michael is an experienced banking & finance partner, qualified in English and Scots law. He is ranked by legal directories as a leading project and development finance lawyer, is a member of the Legal 500 Hall of Fame, and is Brodies' head of energy and infrastructure finance. In a career that includes 6 years at Allen & Overy, London, over 25 years at Dundas & Wilson, Edinburgh and London, and 5 years as a global partner in Andersen Legal before he joined Brodies in 2011, he has significant experience of working on more than 200 UK and overseas energy, infrastructure and public sector project and structured finance transactions, and on capital markets financings with both listed bonds and private placements. He began his career by focussing on North Sea oil and gas project financing, and remains involved today in significant reserve based lending facilities. He advised through the UK's 1990's dash for gas on the build out of combined cycle power projects. His renewable energy expertise started with the funding of early biomass deals using chicken litter fuel in the 1990s and he completed his first onshore wind farm financing in 2002. He has since worked for energy funders and borrowers on a wide range of projects from large portfolio financings to community projects. His infrastructure expertise started with the appearance of PFI in the mid 1990s and he worked on the financing of most of the NPD projects completed in Scotland after it replaced PFI. Recently, he led on the financing of the Republic of Ireland's first community health unit project. and for Aberdeen City Council on their innovative 2016 listed and rated bond issue for £370 million to part-fund their capital investment programme. He also has extensive experience of working for other public sector bodies, including the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, the Scottish National Investment Bank, BEIS in relation to nuclear decommissioning and Covid-related finding for the steel industry, and recently for Innovate UK.
