About Michael Stoner

I am an engineer, scientist, and Project Leader for bioprocess development, scale-up, and plant transfer. I am adept at bacterial fermentation and familiar with many different downstream bioprocessing unit operations including membrane separations, filtration, centrifugation, and chromatography. I love spending time in manufacturing plants, and I view a short-term assignment as Fermentation Engineer in a flagship enzyme production facility as a highlight of my career. I particularly enjoy bridging the gap between Protein Engineers and Process Engineers, and have developed deep skills surrounding “manufacturability evaluation” of protein solubility and expression. I am fascinated by the profound impact that a little bit of process-savvy protein (re)engineering can have on the success of a new process/product. Before joining the Development group at DuPont, I led a small analytical group at Amgen. We were focused on biophysical techniques and methods of detecting protein aggregates/particulates. I have found the rigorous “analytical thinking” I learned in this role to be very helpful in my current work of process troubleshooting and matching often-subtle upstream causes with downstream effects. I am passionate about green chemistry, industrial biotechnology, and just generally finding ways for all of us to sustainably live on our planet.
