About Michael Sutherland

With over 20 years of work experience in urban planning and community development, I am a passionate and skilled leader who can deliver innovative and sustainable solutions for diverse and dynamic communities. As the Deputy Director of Community Development at the City of Littleton, I oversaw the planning and historic preservation divisions, and managed multiple projects and initiatives that enhanced the quality of life, economic vitality, and historic character of the city. I also collaborated with various stakeholders, including city council, residents, businesses, and regional partners, to ensure that the community's vision and goals were reflected and implemented in the city's plans and policies. Previously, as the Planning Manager and the Principal Planner at the City of Littleton and the City and County of Broomfield, respectively, I gained extensive experience and knowledge in urban and regional planning, zoning, land use, transportation, housing, and environmental issues, and led or supported several award-winning plans and projects that addressed the complex and evolving needs and challenges of the communities. Some of the skills that I have developed and applied throughout my career include economic development, historic preservation, project management, public administration, city/urban, community and regional planning, and history and political science. My core competencies are strategic thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and leadership. I am motivated by the mission of creating and maintaining livable, equitable, and resilient communities that foster social, economic, and environmental well-being for all. I am also committed to bringing diverse perspectives and experiences to the team, and to learning and growing from others.
