About Michael Swarzman

Michael Swarzman is a lifelong Chicago resident, having graduated from New Trier High School in 1970, and Butler University in 1974. After working in manufacturing and materials management, he began a career in health care, and has worked in that industry for over thirty-five years in a variety of positions and organizations. Michael received a Masters of Arts degree (English) in 1980, and a Masters of Business Administration in 1985, both from Loyola University of Chicago, and completed additional graduate work in counseling and education at Northeastern University of Chicago. Michael retired from Advocate Aurora Health Care in December, 2020, after serving as the system vice president of growth, and vice president of clinical institutes, business development and hospital based programs at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center (Chicago). Currently Michael maintains a consulting practice with Jim Lifton and Associates specializing in business development, and is a faculty member of the graduate school of public health at the University of Illinois, Chicago, is an active member of the MHA advisory committee of Loyola University’s Graduate Health Care Management Program, and chairs the boards of visitors of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University. Michael is a frequent, national speaker on accountable care organizations and their effects on business development in health systems, and also publishes on physician/health system alignment. Michael was also a national board member of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, serving as its first public representative, and also was a member of the FINCO committee of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Michael is active in a variety of civic organizations, including past Vice Chairman of Hispanocare, Inc, a director of the Masonic Family Health Foundation, volunteer coach in his community, longtime volunteer with Little Brother/Friends of the Elderly, and has been awarded a Chicago Community Builder Award. He is also an avid chess enthusiast, and plays throughout Chicagoland. Michael resides in Evanston, is married to Barbara Grier, and they have two adult children.
