Programming computers is not an art. It’s also not science. There may be a science about computers, but the software itself is not science. A computer program is really math. It’s an ever-growing math problem that must be reduced so that it can be properly managed, and in that, there is beauty. The beauty comes from its ability to accomplish so much in such an abstract form. But, this is not art. That is because computer software must also be practical. This practicality often rips away at the abstractness that would make the software art. It is in this struggle of practicality and abstractness that many of the challenges of software design lay. Computers provide great amazement. I first realized a fascination for computers when as a young child, my families PC came with a book of programs you could write. One program was to get the computer to play a song, and I was fascinated with the idea that computers could translate words into tones. This fascination has driven a life of learning. As computers progressed, along with my understanding, they provided a revolution in knowledge and in communication. Their current ability to compute solutions to seemingly out-of-reach problems is sparking new revolutions. As computers are learning to learn, and as algorithms are replacing entire industries, I am living in anticipation of each new millstone. As computer software lies between the abstract and practical, so does the business I am building. Acquiring data in real time, and presenting it to users in a useful way, solves practical problems for whole industries. Everyone has a different problem, but with math, we can reduce it to one simple and easy to use solution. You will find me at the point where data goes from abstract to practical.
