About Michael Tighe

I'm currently a Senior Software Engineer at MasterClass. I was previously a Senior Software Developer at Auvik Networks, working on the UI team on both client-side applications and server-side GraphQL. Previously, I was web team leader and a senior developer at 500px. I worked in both client-side and backend code, primarily in Javascript (ES6, React+Redux) and Ruby on Rails. As a team leader and senior developer, my responsibilities include: • Writing high quality code • Technical planning, estimation, and scheduling • Working closely with product and design teams to help balance business and technical requirements and concerns • Mentoring more junior team members through pair programming, code reviews, and regular 1 on 1 meetings • Developing and championing best practices, coding standards, new techniques and technologies • Helping define engineering processes and culture across the company • Participating in the hiring process, including conducting interviews and phone screens I completed a PhD in Computer Science at the University of Western Ontario, working under the supervision of Dr. Michael Bauer. My research was in the area of data centre management, particularly concerning autonomic management of a virtualized data centre operating an Infrastructure-as-a-Service Cloud. I looked at techniques and algorithms for dynamically adapting virtual machine placement to meet application objectives (e.g. response time) while simultaneously reducing data centre power consumption and infrastructure requirements. My other, related, research interests include machine learning, distributed systems, and emergent systems.
