About Michael Umhofer

With 27 years of Manufacturing Engineering experience I have worked in industries spanning Aerospace, Defence, Medical, Automotive Design, Concept Car Design, Formula 1, and F1 Powertrains. I started my career in 1996 in California, USA producing components for Pratt & Whitney, Boeing and Lockheed Martin jet engines. I sort of followed my grandfather’s footsteps in engineering as he was an Aerospace Engineer for Hughes Aircraft in Chatsworth, CA in which he developed the booster rockets for the Apollo Missions and the Space Shuttle fleet. I grew up at the foot of Rocket-dyne Santa Susana Test Lab. I can still remember live tests of rocket engines, the rumbling sound at fire up and then massive steam clouds during cool down visible from Simi Valley, my hometown. So, from a young age I had an interest in Engineering.I’m now at the pinnacle of my career as a Manufacturing Engineer for Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains. Starting in 2017, I along with my Engineering colleagues have powered Lewis Hamilton to 7, Formula 1 Driver’s Championships and 8, Formula 1 Constructors Championships. I’ve manufactured the first road legal F1 engine that powers The Project One Hypercar. Now, as I look to the future of motorsport and 2026 in particular, I’m playing an integral part developing the next generation F1 Powertrain. Bring on the next challenge!
