About Michael Waldman

What does the future of academic libraries look like in a world of rapid technological change and evolving student needs? As a library leader with experience serving one of the nation's largest university systems, this question drives my work every day. Having directed initiatives serving over 233K students and $14M in resources, I focus on transforming academic libraries into dynamic hubs that advance educational excellence. The following are some tenets of my strategy: Vision for Academic Libraries I believe a campus’s academic library must serve as the hub of the campus. Libraries aren't about collections on shelves—they're about creating spaces where people come to collaborate, access resources, and innovate. Leading Digital Transformation I successfully led a complex library management system migration during COVID-19, ensuring continuous service while coordinating cross-departmental integration. Through evidence-based acquisition models, I've expanded collections while achieving over $40K in savings through strategic analysis. Building Inclusive Communities By creating pre-semester gatherings and practicing non-defensive listening, I've fostered environments where collaboration thrives. This approach led to securing a $100K archives grant and developing initiatives that better serve diverse student populations. Student Success Advocate My goal is to remove barriers to learning. I've reformed laptop lending policies, created designated quiet quiet study zones, and expedited the purchase of 700 textbooks for course reserves. Through evidence-based acquisitions and consortia partnerships, I moved 50% of the reference collection online, boosting usage while creating valuable study space. Beyond the Library I'm honored to serve as Chair-Elect of ACRL's College Libraries Section and as a member of the NISO CCLIP Organizational Strategy and Governance Working Group. When not advancing library initiatives, you'll find me playing classical piano, swimming, or taking walks in the park. I have two cats and enjoy reading historical detective novels.
