Background
About Michael Yanow
Wisconsin native who moved to Los Angeles six years ago. I have enjoyed living in Southern California every moment except when on the 405 freeway. LA is a place of great adventure and wonderful experiences. In August 2011, I made a life-changing decision: to leave my 9 to 5 job and become a photojournalist. Everyday since, I have challenged myself as a photographer — taking every opportunity that was offered to me to hone my craft. After returning to Santa Monica College as a full-time photography student, I joined the student newspaper, The Corsair. Spending long nights editing and assisting with layout to learn the ways of a weekly paper prepared me for an internship with the Los Angeles Clippers during the 2011-12 season. There, I happily took a space on the court for every home game to provide photographs for the franchise. Other opportunities have taken me to work in the photography department of the second largest public transportation agency in the US and assisting on Barbara Grover’s with her project New Face of Hunger Project commissioned by Mazon. San Francisco based photographer Elizabeth Moran writes, “I’ve always been interested in things I’m not a part of.” Photography is the key that opens doors, allowing me to experience and learn new things. My tireless curiosity drives me to meet people and to hear stories. I am currently working on documenting home owners in Los Angeles County who purchased their home and still live in the house in the late 40s – early 60s under the GI Bill’s provision for a low interest mortgage loan. The overall theme of the project is about the housing booms in southern California.
