About Michael Zimmer

I graduated from Ohio University in 2004 with a Bachelor's degree in Aviation and a minor in Communication. I flight instructed while at Ohio University and, upon graduation, began flight instructing at a flight school in Southern California. After two years of instructing, I took a position flying for an aerial mapping company that flew all over the Country in a small twin engine aircraft (Partenavia). I gained invaluable experience managing this aircraft within a small crew environment. I then took a position with the California Highway Patrol as a Peace Officer, with ambition to fly for their Air Operations Department. I am a fixed wing Pilot for the California Highway Patrol. Our mission is to provide aerial support to ground based law enforcement agencies in various situations such as search and rescue, vehicle pursuits, surveillance, civil disturbances, homeland security, critical transportation flights etc. I have extensive experience flying in congested Class B airspace. I am also very proficient in the usage of glass cockpit systems and IFR flying. I serve as the Unit's Training Pilot; ensuring that Unit pilots adhere to Departmental and FAA training requirements. I also serve as the Unit's Safety Officer. I conducted quarterly safety training events and implement and maintain our Unit's Safety Management System.
